The Robin DR 400 is a popular single-engine, cantilevered French low -wing aircraft made of wood. The wing tips that are bent upwards are characteristic .

history

Robin DR 300/180 R with hood that can be opened to the side.

The Robin DR 400 is a further development of the DR 300 series of the French aircraft manufacturer Center-Est Aéronautique , which in turn emerged from the DR 221 Dauphin and the DR 250 Capitaine . The first variant, the DR 340 Major , had its maiden flight on February 27, 1968.

In 1972 the DR 400 followed under the new company name Avions Pierre Robin , which, in contrast to the previous model, has a sliding cover that can be opened to the front.

In 1988 Avions Pierre Robin was taken over by the Apex Group . In addition to finished aircraft, the manufacturer offered shell constructions or even construction plans for this aircraft, which was made entirely of wood, which is why further new DR 400s were privately built after the temporary end of production after the bankruptcy of the Apex Group in September 2008.

In September 2011, the newly founded company Robin Aircraft regained approval as a manufacturing company; Robin New Aircraft has been building the DR 400 in various versions at Dijon-Darois airfield since 2012 .

The DR401 has been available as a further development of the DR 400 since 2014 . The biggest changes are a wider hood and a new interior. The avionics can consist of pointer instruments or a complete glass cockpit.

construction

New to the range is a version with the 155 hp Thielert Centurion 2.0S diesel engine , the flight tests of which began in February 2010. The DR 400 with this engine has now also been approved for aircraft towing.

use

The abbreviated Remo (from French "Remorqueur" tug / towing aircraft) aircraft mentioned in flight clubs very popular aircraft for the towing of gliders and for conducting scenic flights.

Especially associations, whose members also like to go on further trips, are users of the DR 400 . The low empty weight due to the wooden construction has a positive effect. In contrast to comparable aircraft from other manufacturers in metal construction, the DR 400 is a real four-seater with a possible payload of almost 500 kg.

In addition to the 180 hp (132 kW) engine, the DR 400-180 'Régent' version also has two 40-liter tanks in both wings. With a total of 190 liters of fuel, flights of up to 1100 km (with a 30-minute reserve) are possible with four people and their luggage.

The DR 400 is particularly popular with clubs in the French Alps. The high climbing performance after take-off due to the relatively low curb weight enables take-offs from Altiports (mountain airfields) such as Megève , Courchevel or Meribel even in warm summer .
