history

The hospital building was planned in 1895 and finally built in two construction phases from 1901 to 1904 and from 1905 to 1907 by Schmieden & Boethke. From 1912 to 1916 the complex was expanded by Heinrich Seeling with Winkler and Richard Ermisch. In 1913, Erwin Barth laid out a hospital garden. In 1930 the hospital was expanded to include an X-ray unit. From 1963 to 1968 the new building, the so-called head clinic, was built by Josef Paul Kleihues according to a design by Peter Poelzig. The new building consists of two interconnected structures, the ward block (high-rise block) and the treatment and operating wing. The clinic has been sponsored by the DRK Sisterhood Berlin eV since 1991 and has since been expanded into a modern clinic. The hospital complex was extensively renovated from 1996 to 2001, the old buildings were renovated until 1999 and the new buildings until 2001. During the division of Berlin, the hospital complex on Spandauer Damm was operated by the Free University of Berlin (FU) as the Charlottenburg University Hospital . In the 1980s, the FU gave up this site for the Rudolf Virchow Hospital in Wedding . On May 20, 2006, a memorial plaque for Gottfried Benn was unveiled on the building of the Pathological Institute. In 1912/13 he was a doctor at the Pathological Institute of what was then the Westend Hospital. The memorial plaque was unveiled at a symposium on the 120th birthday and 50th anniversary of Gottfried Benn's death.
