Dakine is an American sporting goods manufacturer based in Hood River in the US state of Oregon .

The name Dakine is a term in Hawaiian Creole English (derived from "the kind") and means as much as the word "Dings" in German (ie everything and nothing), but also "the best" in an expanded sense.

history

Due to the rapid development in sports such as surfing and windsurfing in the 1970s, the equipment required became more and more specialized. Rob Kaplan therefore started in Haiku on the island of Maui ( Hawaii ) in 1979 to manufacture the first lines to meet the special requirements of sport. In 1980 Kaplan developed improved, more strongly padded foot straps for the new generation of waveboards, followed by harnesses, neoprene suits and other special products. The development of adjustable foot straps for surfboards between 1981 and 1984 was particularly important for its success . The company expanded in 1986 by opening a representative office on the North American mainland. In 1989 the product range was expanded to include articles for the snowboard market. A skateboard collection was finally added in 1999 .

In Germany, Dakine became known not only for its surf products but also for its backpacks. With kitesurfing , new products emerged such as the first series of Kite Fusion harnesses 2001, which were supplemented in 2005 by a combination of pants and harness.

Dakine was acquired by Billabong in 2008 for 100 million US dollars (approx. 70 million euros) and in 2013 due to financial difficulties of the parent company for only 70 million Australian dollars (approx. 48.6 million euros) to the US American private equity firm Altamont Capital Partners sold.
