development

The DachKino was founded in 2004 by Christian "August" Geyler and Christian Brust as a non-profit cinema for amateur and young talent and has been running since then as a project of the Steinstraße e. V. ( Sociocultural Center ) and the media workshop “Die Fabrik” e. V. It was run exclusively by volunteers. The initial concept was derived from the DachTheater, which only shows amateur theater. A professionalization took place through the own demands and those of the audience. B. resulted in cooperation with the Warsaw Film School, the Katowice Film School and the Prague Culture Club Roxy.

With the DachKino a permanent platform was created for young and independent filmmakers, which gave them the opportunity to make their works accessible to a wider audience outside of film festivals. The shortage of short films in German cinemas is also compensated for. Accordingly, there are some short films that z. Some of them can only be seen in the rooftop cinema. In the meantime, the DachKino receives several international inquiries from independent filmmakers about showing their productions every week.

As in similar art house cinemas, films from the distributors were shown. The unique selling point of the cinema and thus an enrichment of the cultural diversity in the cinema segment remained the predominant showing of films without rental, which were made directly by filmmakers, e.g. B. from Dessau, Kassel, Cologne, Potsdam-Babelsberg, Katowice (Poland), Warsaw or Budapest were submitted directly to the cinema. Some of the films celebrated their German premiere in the DachKino, including of course the international short films from the DachKino partner cinema Cube Microplex Bristol (UK). The short film program included a. Films that were also shown at well-known festivals such as the SWR Medienkunstrolle or the Cannes Festival ( I took the red pill by Ramesh Pallikara, Das Kind (The Child) by Steffen Blechschmidt), but have not been shown in any other cinema since. The repertoire, which encompassed almost all genres, ranged from short and animated films to experimental films and award-winning, but loan-free documentaries such as " Resist " by Karin Kaper and Dirk Szuszie.

In the summer of 2006, the DachKino attracted attention with a summer tour. Under the title “DachKino Sommertour” it showed three different short film compilations in Leipzig pubs and cafés in different parts of the city. The associated CityCard found over 13,000 interested parties. The highlight of the summer tour was the meeting of IG Freie Szene Leipzig at the Alte Messe Leipzig. Since then, the tour, for which no admission is required for performances, has taken place in August for a period of 5 weeks. Since 2008, the entire event has had a specific theme (2008 "New Authenticity", 2009 "Your Magic ...").

The highlight of the program work was the Helga Reidemeister retrospective in March 2007. Over the course of a month, all of the famous documentarist's works were shown in over 50 events. She herself was a guest at the opening and the final. The DachKino had digitized countless documents and photos of their work in advance and published the first overview of their works and biography available online.

In 2007, the initiators of the roof cinema decided to expand the conceptual concept to include a similarly working gallery. To this end, on April 11, 2008, they founded Neue Eigenlichkeit eG. The DackKino was closed on December 31, as the operators saw no opportunities for further development in the cramped conditions with only 28 seats. Since then, this cultural cooperative has tried to implement the concept in Leipzig city center. For this purpose, the Neue Eigenlichkeit rented a basement in 2011 in the passage " Kleines Joachimsthal " (Kleine Fleischergasse 8) and started a renovation. Two cinema halls, a gallery and a bar were to be built. Due to various problems with the landlord and the operating permit, the project was abandoned and the new property was liquidated from March 17, 2013.
