Batten
Roof battens are wooden battens that support the roof covering and are nailed across the counter battens or directly onto the rafters .
In contrast to rafters, roof battens are not fastened upright, but flat. The distance between the battens depends on the roofing used. The lowest batten, which ends at the eaves , can consist of two battens nailed on top of each other or the eaves plank . Roof battens are often arranged as a wind panicle to stiffen the roof .
Dimensions
The standard dimensions must be 24 × 48 mm, 30 × 50 mm or 40 × 60 mm (according to DIN 4070-1) in the final moisture content specified for the purpose (approx. 20% wood moisture content ). The cut is made in fresh (damp) logs with approx. 3% oversize. Alternatively, the raw material is dried in the drying chamber in the sawmill to approx. 20% wood moisture before the cut, which enables a true-to-size cut.
standardization
The roof batten is subject to DIN 4074 Part 1 if it is used for structural purposes (e.g. roof covering). Here it is differentiated from the conventionally produced latte, the quality class of which is determined according to the Tegernsee customs ; this batten is not subject to DIN and may not be used in its conventional form for actual roof batten. DIN 4074 shows the sorting of the batten according to load-bearing capacity (controlled e.g. by the number and size of branches) in the S10 sorting as the actual roof batten and also protects the term legally through the definition of the DIN.
