Counter battens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The counter-battens are perpendicular to the actual battens laid battens , a certain distance between on roofs roofing felt or sarking and roofing to achieve. In drywall construction , too, the substructure of suspended ceilings and wall cladding are referred to as counter battens.

In the roof construction, the counter battens run from the roof ridge to the eaves , the battens lie on the rafters . The roof battens that support the roofing are then nailed across the counter battens.

According to the technical rules for roofing, a distance of at least 30 mm between the sub- roof and the roofing is required above (rainproof) sub- roofs , sub- roofs or soffits . The distance is considered necessary to ensure the drainage of water that has penetrated the sub-roof and to ventilate the cover. Counter battens are one way of implementing this gap.

Interior work

Representation of cross battens in the interior

In the interior is also commonly referred to as a counter batten or Kreuzlattung. In addition to compensating for differences in height, the purpose here is to create space for insulation and electrical installations, for example. In addition, the cross battens create the possibility of being able to attach the "active" battens (the lower one) at will (i.e. without depending on the position of the fastening points in the ceiling), as it is mounted on the upper battens. In timber construction, the counter-battens also have the function of compensating for tensions that can arise from twisting and twisting the primary structure (main beam), in order to prevent these forces from destroying the top surfaces. This risk is minimized with metal posts.
