A spit , a splice or chippings / roof chippings is the name given to narrow, thin wooden shingles that were used for waterproofing a simple roof covering. The Spließ is, for example, the joints of the plain tile inserted. This ensures that no water can penetrate with the so-called single covering. The wooden plate or shingle is made of soft wood ( pine or larch wood ) to make it easier to work with. Today, spikes are often made from other materials such as metal or plastic .

In northern Germany, docks made from straw or later from roofing felt were used in the same way as spikes.

Roof chippings were made by a special craftsman, the chip maker. To do this, the individual roof chippings were simply cut off a block of wood with a hatchet .
