Dagomys ( Russian Дагомыс ) is a district of Sochi in Russia . It is located in the Krasnodar region , five kilometers northwest of central Sochi on the Black Sea coast . Dagomys is considered the tea capital of Russia and is a popular subtropical seaside resort. The district has about 30,000 inhabitants.

climate

Usually the temperatures are around 2 ° C lower than at the southern end of the city. However, the water temperature is the same everywhere on the coast.

tourism

Many tourists rent small apartments in Dagomys in summer and live there for the duration of their vacation. Rental apartments are rented out without a contract and are often significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel.

Dagomys has established itself as the center of the party scene and nightlife in Sochi in recent years and attracts young people in particular. Open-air discos, where parties are held in the open air, are particularly popular.

However, the drug scene has also taken its place there. Heroin is widespread and is very often confiscated by the militia , as is the use of cannabis . The main reason for the comparatively high proportion of cannabis users is the wild hemp, which can be collected, cultivated and consumed undisturbed in the forest. Alcohol abuse is also common , especially among young tourists.

The name of the place comes from the Circassian language and means cool, shady place . Due to the influx of cool air from the foothills of the nearby Caucasus , it is cooler in Dagomys in summer than in other seaside resorts. In 1896, Tsar Nicholas II built a country estate with a large park there.

Dagomys is home to several large hotels. The largest with 27 floors was built by the Soviet Intourist hotel group in the late 1970s . The Datscha Botscharow Rutschei , bordering on Dagomys, was built in the 1950s for Kliment Voroshilov and today serves as a country residence for the Russian President . He often spends his holidays there and conferred with foreign heads of state.

The seaside resort has hosted international conferences on various occasions. In September 1988 the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs on the dismantling of nuclear weapons took place in Dagomys . In January 1992 Russia and Ukraine negotiated there about the division of the Soviet Black Sea fleet. In June 1992 Russia and Georgia signed a ceasefire agreement for South Ossetia in Dagomys .
