history

The Noble Ladies Club was founded on January 3rd, 1800 by a number of women in Münster. The ladies' club included all the higher-ups, including the Prussian officers, and it even had some political influence. For the Prussian king, the invitation from the Noble Ladies' Club was a tribute to the aristocracy of Münsterland and a highlight of his visit to Münster. Only civil, that is, count and baronial persons of both sexes were permitted.

The original purpose of the club was card games and entertainment, whereby the interest of the upper class , for whom the women's club became a central institution, soon extended the purpose of the foundation to all facets of social life. The Noble Ladies Club proved to be the appropriate forum for satisfying all the social needs of the nobility. Membership or approval became a prerequisite for any higher effectiveness in the city. Therefore, even the Prussian general Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher became a guest of the club. The parents of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff were also among the first members .

The mother of Clemens August Droste zu Vischering was president from 1801, in 1830 the bishop of Münster, Kaspar Maximilian von Droste-Vischering , headed the association. The Archbishop of Cologne Clemens August , brother of the Bishop of Münster, himself - he was a member since the foundation (No. 31) - used the events from time to time as a meeting point. Although he no longer appeared on the membership list in 1809, he took part in the activities of this most important institution for his class at least from 1827 until the end of his life.
