The Damocles Point is a headland on the east coast of the West Antarctic Alexander Island . It is 3 miles east-southeast of the south summit of Mount Tyrrell . It is characterized by a rocky promontory at sea level, which is surmounted by a 60 m high ice cliff.
The first aerial photographs were taken in 1937 during the British Graham Land Expedition under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out surveys in 1948. It is named for a place where geological samples were taken and the overhanging cliff reminded of the story of the sword of Damocles .
