Dan Namingha

Dan Namingha (* 1950 in Keams Canyon , Arizona ) is one of the most important Indian artists in North America. The contemporary painter and sculptor belongs to the Hopi and combines tradition with modern art.

Family and education

Dan Namingha's great-grandmother revived the Hopi pottery tradition at the beginning of the 20th century. His grandmother, mother and sister are famous potters today . Dan Namingha's grandfather and uncle have become known as carvers of Kachina figures.

Namingha studied at the University of Kansas , the Academy of American Art in Chicago and the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe (New Mexico) , where he also lives today.

The vastness of the habitat of the Hopi Indians and their symbols are reflected in Namingha's paintings and sculptures. They determine the themes and forms of his works and are also expressed in the colors he uses, such as mustard yellow, purple, turquoise, red and black. As early as 1979 the San Francisco Chronicle wrote on the occasion of a Namingha exhibition:

“Dan Namingha is arguably the most talented, original, and most important Indian artist in America today. This speaks from the magnificence of his abstractions and from the way in which he makes use of nature (and its traditions) in his extremely creative imagination ... "

Exhibitions and collections

Namingha has participated in a variety of solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe. In summer 2012 he also exhibited in Germany. His paintings, drawings and sculptures are in the holdings of numerous important public and private collections, including the National Museum of American Indian Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC , art museums such as those in San Francisco , Denver and Dallas , the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum in Boston as well as collections like those of NASA or the US Department of the Interior . His largest painting at 3 × 9 m hangs in Phoenix Airport .

Awards

  • In 1995 Dan Namingha was awarded the New Mexico State Art Prize.
  • In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA).
  • In 2012 the Heard Museum in Phoenix (Arizona) honored him and his sons Arlo and Michael as Artist of the Year with an extensive exhibition.
