Daniel Arlon Vogel (* 1955 ) is an American non-fiction author who publishes on Mormonism . The book Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet is one of his best known works.

life and work

Vogel studied history at California State University, Long Beach , and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts . Even before graduation, he published his first book on the early days of Mormonism. Since then he has published on the founder of the Church Joseph Smith and his time. In September 2004 Vogel received the John Whitmer Historical Association Award . In May 2005 he was awarded the Mormon History Association Prize for Literature . He received both awards for the book Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet .

In The Making of a Prophet , Vogel argues that Joseph Smith was a devout impostor who fabricated his religious claims to serve what he believed to be a noble cause. Vogel sees the origin of religious deception in the conflicts between the members of the Smith family. These were split between the skepticism and universalism of Joseph Smith, Sr. (the father of Joseph Smith) and the more socially acceptable Protestantism of Lucy Mack Smith (the mother of Joseph Smith). Joseph smith jr. managed to reunite the family. He did so by publishing the Book of Mormon and establishing the Church of Christ . The family members were also important witnesses to the Book of Mormon. Vogel connects the story of Joseph Smith with the writing of the Book of Mormon, which he views as a work shaped by the experiences and psychology of Smith.

Vogel also reissued the book Mormonism Unvailed (sic) by Eber D. Howe, first published in 1834 . This book was the first critical study of the Book of Mormon. With the help of statements from neighbors and acquaintances of Joseph Smith, Howe examines his role critically.

criticism

Mormon apologists and scholars accuse Vogel of bias in his research. Larry Morris, professor at Brigham Young University , recognizes his efforts to publish the multi-issue, award-winning Early Mormon Documents .

Members of the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies dispute the connections Vogel makes between the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith . There is no evidence of the parallels Vogel draws between Smith's family conflicts and those described in the Book of Mormon.
