Dan Voiculescu (musician)

Dan-Alexandru Voiculescu (* 1940 ; † 2009 ) was a Romanian composer, doctorate in musicology (1983) and professor of counterpoint and composition at the Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca (from 1963) and at the Music University in Bucharest (from 2000), and a member of the Association of Romanian Composers and Musicologists (from 1965).

Career

From 1958 to 1964 he attended the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). In 1963 he received the piano diploma (under the direction of Magda Kardos) and in 1964 the composition diploma (under the direction of Sigismund Toduță ). In 1965 he was a member of the Union of Romanian Composers. In 1968 he studied composition with Virgilio Mortari in Venice (Italy) and from 1971 to 1972 with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne (Germany). In 1972 and 1978 he attended the Darmstadt courses for new music .

From 1979 to 1991 he was the editor of Lucrari de Muzicologie (Musicological Works), published by the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. In 1983 he became a doctor of musicology. In 1984 he received the George Enesco Prize from the Romanian Academy and in 1989 the Mihai Eminescu Prize. From 1972 to 2005 he received the Union of Romanian Composers' Prize seven times.

His works have been published in the Editura Muzicala, Bucharest (Romania), Editura Arpeggione, Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and the music publisher Gentner Hartmann, Trossingen (Germany).

His musicological studies fill a niche in Romanian literature: they contribute to an understanding of the polyphony of 20th century classical music. His compositions have been performed in Romania and abroad.
