Danay Suárez Fernández (* 1985 in Havana ) is a Cuban rapper and R&B singer.

Live and act

Danay Suárez was born in 1985 in Cerro , a district in the center of Havana. After her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Santa Fe , a quiet suburb of the capital.

She only came to music by chance. There were no musical role models in her family. She began to write texts and improvise rhythms about personal matters. When she was 15 she was allowed to sing in the Teatro Nacional for the first time . Further appearances organized by the state rap agency followed. She later started with Aldo, a member of the well-known underground rap duo Los Aldeanos . He helped her record her first songs (“Libre”, “Individual”) and sang “La la la” with her.

The computer scientist initially composed her songs at home on an old PC and a MIDI keyboard. In 2007 she went unannounced with her demo recordings to the Cuban fusion superstar X Alfonso , who didn’t know her yet and asked him to listen to her music. A few days later he called back and asked Danay to work with him. This is how the British producer Gilles Peterson became aware of them.

In 2010 Danay Suárez took part in Peterson's Havana Cultura Series project . She toured Paris , Amsterdam , London and other European cities. An EP was released together with the Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca Danai Suárez - Havanna Cultura Sessions . She also appeared on Peterson's album Gills Peterson Presents Havana Cultura: The Search Continues . Peterson called her the most amazing singer he'd worked with in the past five years. Suárez 'work with Peterson and Fonseca opened the door to the world of jazz and underscored her talent for working in different genres of music.

In 2011 Danays Suárez 'first album, Polvo de la humedad , was released, which she produced with Roberto Fonseca, whom she describes as a friend and mentor. In 2012 she contributed a track to the album Mala in Cuba from dubstep producer Mala. She performed at well-known international music festivals such as Hip-Hop al Parque in Colombia or at the Festival de la Canción de Viña del Mar in Chile . There was a small "scandal" here in 2017. Danay Suárez submitted Yo aprendí as the original festival entry and was considered the favorite for the main prize. But in her second contribution she sang a new interpretation of her song Dejando al mundo , in which she campaigned for Christianity and against abortion . This change was not permitted according to the current festival rules, so that it should have been disqualified. At the end of her performance Danay Suárez commented with the words “I know that I just lost the award, but it was more important to me to save a life today.” The jury then postponed the award ceremony for one day. The jury president, the Mexican Mario Domm, commented: “Danay is unique. Not only did she change it, she improved it by 100 percent. ”She actually lost the main festival prize for“ Best Artist ”, but she was honored with a special prize for inspiration,“ for the poetry of her words ”.

In March 2017, Suárez's second studio album, Palabras manuales , was released, which was also produced by Roberto Fonseca. She emphasizes that it was recorded analog and not software down to the last detail .
