Dane Zajc

Dane Zajc (born October 26, 1929 in Zgornja Javoršica near Moravče , Yugoslavia , today Slovenia ; † October 20, 2005 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian poet, playwright and author.

Life

Zajc finished his education in Ljubljana and worked there as a librarian in a children's library until his retirement. He published his first poems in 1948 in the magazine Mladinska revija . Later works appeared in Beseda , Naša sodobnost , Revija 57 , Perspektive , Problemi , Sodobnost and Nova revija .

Dane Zajc was regarded as the most important contemporary Slovenian poet and playwright and received all major literary prizes in his homeland, including the prestigious Prešeren Prize. Dane Zajc's books have been translated into several languages. From 1991 to 1995 he headed the Slovenian section of the PEN Center. Zajc was a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

The American musician Chris Eckman ( The Walkabouts ) set poems by Dane Zajc to music on the 2008 album "The Last Side of the Mountain".
