Daniel Colonius the Elder

Daniel Colonius the Elder (also: van Keulen ; born September 27, 1566 in Gent , † August 16, 1635 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the Metz pastor in Ghent, Peter Colonius, and his wife Sara Ackermann, had studied at the University of Geneva under Théodore de Bèze and since August 16, 1589 at the University of Leiden . In Leiden he had defended his Theses de providentia Dei on October 14, 1589 , 1590 under Jacob Ramsaeus De natura logices , and in 1590 he was appointed preacher in Rotterdam , where he was supposed to support the pastors there. In 1605 he was appointed the first regent of the Walloon College in Leiden and was introduced to this office on May 30, 1606. After rejecting an offer from Rotterdam, he was appointed pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in Leiden.

As a member of the Walloon College, he had participated in the Walloon Synods and in 1619 took part in the Synod in Dortrecht , where he appeared as an ardent advocate of the counter-remonstrants. His contemporaries describe him as a mild theologian who strove for the unity of the Reformed Church. Analysis paraphrastica Institutionum theol comes from his pen . Joh. His marriage to Maria de Becquere on December 10, 1595 resulted in five children. The son Daniel Colonius the Younger also gained importance as professor of law at the University of Leiden.
