The former Rhine bridge Gernsheim at river kilometer 461.5 was built in 1939 and blown up by the Wehrmacht before March 20, 1945 to stop the approaching Allies . Until the bridge was completed in 1940, there was a ferry connection between Gernsheim and Eich or Hamm am Rhein . The remains are in the immediate vicinity of the port and the Gernsheim Rhine ferry .

Despite several attempts, the bridge was not rebuilt after the Second World War . A large part of the steel girders of the former bridge structure were salvaged after the destruction and used as emergency roof beams for the Worms Cathedral , whose vaults were exposed to the weather without a roof due to the war. This "steel beam" exists to the present day and is considered a curiosity.

The water police have moved into their quarters on the bunker of the bridge protection. The bunker is still part of the police station today.

The demolition of the ramp on the east side began on August 26, 2015, after the west side had already been removed in 2006. Only the pillar, which is directly connected to the water police building, will remain. Since then, only the foundations of the pillars have protruded from the Rhine itself.
