Daniel Jacobson
Daniel Jacobson (born 1861 ; died 1939 ) was a Danish psychiatrist and neurologist . He was the chief physician of the psychiatric department of the Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen and became one of the most popular therapists in Scandinavia through his appearance.
Edvard Munch as a patient
Daniel Jacobson's patients included a number of Scandinavian artists in particular. He became particularly known as the therapist of the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch , who was treated in his clinic from 1908 to 1909. Jacobson diagnosed strong manic - depressive disorders in the well-known artist, which he attributed to excessive alcohol consumption ( alcoholism ). In addition to heart massage and pine needle baths, the treatment also included light electrical stimulation of the brain. After the treatment, the artist's subject changed . He no longer painted dying people, corpses and ailments, but instead scenes of life such as peaceful landscapes, farmers or fishermen.
During his stay, Munch painted three portraits of the doctor, as well as a drawing of the electrical treatment , on which Jacobson and his assistant Sigrid Schacke were shown. Sigrid Schacke was also portrayed in the drawing The Nurse .
