Daniel Louw

Daniel Johannes Louw (* 1944 ) is a South African Protestant theologian, pastoral psychologist and university professor . He is Professor Emeritus of Practical Theology , Pastoral Care and Counseling at Stellenbosch University , South Africa.

Life

After completing his theological training, Louw studied philosophy in Tübingen . He turned to the philosophy of Ernst Bloch and the "theology of hope" ( Jürgen Moltmann ). He then worked as a pastor at the Dutch Reformed Church in Wynberg ( Cape Town ) and in Stellenbosch , and from 1978 he held teaching positions at the University of Stellenbosch.

He qualified in theology and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Stellenbosch in 1987 , a Bachelor of Theology (BTh) in 1990 and a Master of Theology (MTh) in 1991. This was followed in 1994 with a doctorate (DTh) at the University of the Western Cape .

In his teaching activities, he represents the fields of practical theology, pastoral theology and pastoral counseling. The main focus of his teaching activities are clinic pastoral care and terminal care, marriage and family pastoral care as well as social issues such as poverty and AIDS .

From 2001 to 2005 he took on the role of dean of the theological faculty, after his retirement in 2010 he continues to teach as a visiting professor at the faculty.
