Daniel Zaragoza (* 11. December 1957 in Mexico City , Mexico ) is a former Mexican boxer in Superbantam- and bantamweight . He was trained by Ignacio Beristain .

Professional career

He was able to make all of his first 14 fights victorious; most of the victories were knockout victories . On May 5, 1985 he fought in the bantamweight against Fred Jackson for the vacant world title of the WBC and won by disqualification in the 7th round. He lost this belt in his first title defense in August of the same year to the previously undefeated Miguel Lora .

In super bantamweight he won the vacant WBC world championship belt in late February 1988 through a technical knockout victory in the 10th round against Carlos Zárate . He defended this title five times in a row and lost it to Paul Banke on April 23, 1990 .

However, he was able to conquer this title again on June 14 of the following year when he defeated the Japanese Kiyoshi Hatanaka by a split point decision. He defended this belt in the same year against Joon Huh and in the rematch against Paul Banke and lost it on March 20, 1992 to Thierry Jacob by unanimous decision on points.

In November 1995, the now almost 38-year-old southpaw met Hector Acero-Sanchez . This fight was about the WBC world champion belt. Zaragoza won this fight by a split judge's decision and thus won this title in this weight class for the third time. He defended this belt four times and lost it at the age of 39 on September 6, 1997 to his compatriot Erik Morales, who was still undefeated, by knockout in the 11th round. After this defeat, Daniel Zaragoza ended his career.

In 2004 Daniel Zaragoza was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
