Daniel Zhang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Zhang , also Zhang Yong , (simplified Chinese: 张勇; traditional Chinese: 張勇; pinyin: Zhāng Yǒng; * 1972 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese manager and CEO of the Alibaba Group .

Life

Zhang studied economics and finance at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and then worked as an accountant. In 2007 he became Chief Financial Officer at Taobao (a subsidiary of Alibaba). The following year he became Taobao’s Chief Operating Officer. In 2011 he was promoted to president of Tmall , a business-to-consumer service that was split off from Taobao. While running Tmall, Zhang created the Singles' Day Shopping Holiday. More products are now sold on this day than on Cyber Monday and Black Friday combined.

In 2013, Zhang was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the Alibaba Group and in 2015, succeeded Jonathan Lu as CEO. On September 10, 2018, Jack Ma announced that Zhang would also take over the chairmanship of the Executive Board with effect from September 10, 2019 in one year. There is speculation that the much more inconspicuous Zhang should lead the company, as Jack Ma was too much in the foreground for the Chinese government.
