history

Tmall.com was first launched by Taobao in April 2008 as Taobao Mall . In November 2010, Taobao Mall launched the independent web address tmall.com to separate Taobao’s B2B offers from C2C offers. Meanwhile, a $ 30 million advertising campaign has been launched to increase brand awareness among consumers.

In June 2011, Jack Ma, Chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group, announced in an internal email that Taobao had been restructured. It has now been reorganized into three separate companies. As a result, Tmall.com became an independent business under the Alibaba Group. The other two companies that emerged from the restructuring are Taobao Marketplace (a C2C marketplace) and eTao (a shopping search engine ). The move was deemed necessary for Taobao to mitigate competition, which had increased over the past two years as the internet and e-commerce landscape changed dramatically.

In October 2011, Tmall.com experienced two consecutive waves of online riots as the fees for the online providers increased significantly. Service fees increased from 6,000 yuan ($ 940) to 60,000 yuan ($ 9,400) per year, and a mandatory flat-rate payment of 10,000 yuan ($ 1,570) to 150,000 yuan ($ 23,500) was imposed. According to Tmall.com, the price increase should help weed out merchants who too often offered fakes, substandard products, and poor customer service. Stores that have received top marks for service and quality from customers and high sales are eligible for a partial or full refund.

On January 11, 2012, TMall.com officially changed its Chinese name to Tiān Māo (天 猫), the Chinese pronunciation of Tmall, which literally means "sky cat".

In February 2014, Alibaba launched Tmall Global as a cross-border marketplace for overseas brands and retailers selling directly to Chinese consumers. Tmall Global's largest stores include Costco from the USA and DM-Drogerie Markt from Germany . Tmall wants to start new partnerships with luxury brands every month since 2018.
