Elena Daniela Cârlan (born September 18, 1980 in Sibiu ) is a Romanian athlete. She walked first and later switched to marathon.

Walker

She started athletics at the age of twelve and specialized in walking. In 1998 she took part in the World Junior Athletics Championships and came in fifth in the 5 km walk. At the European Junior Athletics Championships in 1999 in Riga, she won the silver medal behind the Russian Larisa Safronova . In 2001, Cârlan was ninth in the 20 km walk at the U23 European Championships .

In 2003, Cârlan took part in the World Athletics Championships for the first time . In Paris she reached the 23rd place. In 2004 she qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens, where she came in 37th place.

Runner

In 2005 Cârlan ended her walking career and turned to long-distance running. When the Berlin Marathon in 2008 , she was ninth. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 she was the Romanian champion. In 2010 she also took part in the European Championships , but could not finish the marathon. In 2016 she took part in her second Olympic Games . In Rio, however, she could not achieve the goal.
