Danijel Popović (born March 3, 1982 in Vukovar , † October 23, 2002 in Borovo ) was a Croatian football player .

Career

Popović grew up in the eastern Croatian city of Vukovar, where he played for the local football club NK Vukovar '91 . In 2001, at the age of 19, he was accepted into the first team to play in the second division and scored eleven goals in just 14 appearances. In addition, he ran for the Croatian U-20 and later for the U-21 national team. At the end of 2001 he was loaned to the French first division club SC Bastia . Despite the good performance in his home country, he hardly played a role in the team and came on a single mission. Accordingly, he was not committed there for further seasons and returned to Croatia in the summer of 2002. Popović decided against his previous club and signed with the first division club NK Osijek . In Osijek he became a regular again and was able to score four goals in eleven games by October 2002.

death

The player was on his way home on the evening of October 23, 2002 when he lost control of his car near the town of Borovo and crashed into a power pole by the side of the road. This hit the car, killed Popović and injured his passenger.
