Borovo ( Serbian - Cyrillic Борово , Hungarian Boró , German  Worow ), also Borovo Selo to distinguish it from the Borovo Naselje district of Vukovar , is a municipality in the eastern Croatian county of Vukovar-Syrmia . The municipality is located a few kilometers north of Vukovar on the banks of the Danube , which is the border river to the Serbian province of Vojvodina at Borovo . According to the 2011 census, the population is 5,056. 89.7% of them are Serbs .

The shoe factory of the same name is located near Borovo and had over 20,000 employees at the end of the 1980s. Today only about 3,000 people are employed there.

During the Croatian War , the place was the scene of the Borovo Selo skirmish in May 1991 . In the ensuing battle for Vukovar , the shoe factory was largely destroyed and the Borovo naselje massacre occurred .
