Ilok ( German  (outdated) Illok , Hungarian Újlak ) is the easternmost town and municipality in Croatia . The city is located in the Vukovar-Syrmia County and it is located on a hill above the Danube , which forms the border with the Serbian province of Vojvodina . According to the 1991 census, the town of Ilok has 5,897 people and the parish has a total of 8,351. In the city, which is interesting for day-trippers, there is a Franciscan monastery and other historical sights.

The city is connected to the city of Bačka Palanka in the Serbian province of Vojvodina by a bridge over the Danube .

history

The area of ​​today's Ilok was first settled in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. In Roman times , the Cuccium fort was built as a border fortification for the province of Pannonia on the Danube Limes . Slavs began to settle in the 6th century. The area later came under the rule of Bulgaria and then to the Kingdom of Hungary .

In the 12th and 13th centuries Ilok was mentioned under the names "Iwnlak, Vilak, Vylok, Wyhok, and Wylak". In 1526 the city came under the rule of the Ottomans . In 1697 the troops of the Habsburgs captured the Ilok. On October 17, 1991, non-Serbs were expelled by the troops of the Yugoslav People's Army and Serbian paramilitaries at the beginning of the Croatian War, their houses looted and devastated and the city joined the Republic of Serbian Krajina . The area was fully integrated into Croatia again by 1998 in accordance with the Erdut Agreement concluded in 1995 .

economy

Ilok is a regional center of viticulture . Mainly the grape varieties Traminer , Riesling , Burgundy and Graševina are grown.

tourism

Significant cultural and historical monuments on the borderline between eastern and western art as well as numerous relics of Islamic architecture make Ilok an interesting small town in this part of Croatia.
