Erdut Agreement
The Erdut Agreement of November 12, 1995 (officially: Basic Agreement on the Territory of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia ) is a treaty concluded in the Croatian municipality of Erdut between the Republic of Croatia and the former Serbian de facto regime of Eastern Croatia, the Republic of Serbian Krajina ( RSK ). The signatories were Hrvoje Šarinić for the Croatian side and Milan Milanović for the RSK.
Content of the contract
The agreement regulates the reintegration of Eastern Slavonia , the Baranja and Westsyrmiens in the Croatian territory in the Croatian War of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina were. In contrast to the areas in central and southern Croatia, the incorporation took place in a peaceful manner and its signing was agreed during the negotiations of the Dayton Agreement between the then incumbent President Franjo Tuđman and Slobodan Milošević .
The contracting parties asked the United Nations for an interim administration of no more than two years, which the UN Security Council set up in January 1996 through Security Council Resolution 1023 with the armed UNTAES mission . It was supposed to ensure the demilitarization of the areas and enable the refugees to return . Further tasks were the training of local police forces and the organization of local elections. The UNTAES mandate ended on January 15, 1998 with the complete transfer of sovereignty to the Croatian authorities.
In addition, equal rights for all members of the various ethnic groups, respect for human and minority rights according to international standards and the return of illegally confiscated property were agreed for the areas. On the basis of the agreement, the Vukovar Joint Municipal Council was set up , in which representatives of the Serbian population group have since been involved in realizing human and minority rights.
