Tovarnik is a municipality in the eastern part of Croatia . It is located in the Syrmia region and is very close to the border with Serbia .

geography

Tovarnik is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Osijek and 20 kilometers southeast of Vukovar , 10 km south of the Danube . Vukovar and Vinkovci are the two largest closest cities in Croatia, and Šid in neighboring Serbia. This border is an EU external border ; Serbia is currently not a member of the EU.

Administratively, the municipality belongs to the Vukovar-Srijem County (Croatian Vukovarsko-srijemska županija ). Tovarnik includes the villages of Tovarnik directly on the Serbian border and Ilača to the west.

Between Šid and Tovarnik there is the border crossing of the D46 in Croatia and the highway 120 in Serbia (from Sremska Mitrovica ). The A3 (Croatian autoroute or Serbian autoput ) passes a few kilometers south at Lipovac .

The Zagreb – Belgrade railway line runs from Zagreb via Tovarnik and Sid to Belgrade .

history

Already during the time of the Roman rule there was the settlement Ulmo at the place of today's Tovarnik. The first written mention of the name Tovarnik took place in the 14th century in a contract in which Martin, the son of Ban Andrija, gave his Tovarnik estate to his second wife Klara. This contract was drawn up on June 1, 1335.

In 1738 the new Church of St. Matthew and St. Bartholomew was built and consecrated. In the same century the Franciscan order came to Tovarnik.

In 2015, the location came into the focus of international attention when, in the course of the refugee crisis in Europe, 100,000 people tried to reach Germany or other EU countries from Greece ( Balkan route ). After Hungary had completed its border fence with Serbia in mid-September that year , the Horgoš / Röszke crossing was closed. As a result, the flow of refugees shifted to the route Croatia – Slovenia – southeast Austria, as these countries had announced safe conduct. The Serbian-Croatian border was the EU's external border at the time , but not the Schengen external border ; Croatia had not yet signed this agreement after joining the EU in 2013 . Thanks to the information on social media, the migrants reacted very quickly to the changed situation, and the Šid / Tovarnik border crossing became the focus of the refugee crisis within a few days. On the first day after the Hungarian border was closed, on September 16, 9,000 people passed the border here after a chain of police that was supposed to enable an orderly border crossing was broken.
