Marine casualty 2014

The school organizes a school excursion every year in order to give students who will soon have to prepare intensively for the university entrance exams a short break from work. The destination of the excursion is Jejudo Island . In the first few years, the students flew to the island. In 2013 the excursion was extended by one day and a thirteen-hour ferry crossing was chosen for the first time. On the evening of April 15, 2014, 325 students from Danwon High School, mostly between the ages of 16 and 17, accompanied by 15 teachers, embarked on the ferry Sewol for the four-day school trip. The following morning around nine o'clock (local time) the ferry capsized, about three hours before its scheduled arrival. Numerous students and teachers are among the victims of the disaster. Only 75 students could save themselves.

The school's 52-year-old assistant principal Kang Min-Kyu was rescued from the sinking ferry. He was found dead two days later, and according to the media, he committed suicide and left a suicide note.

Three schoolgirls canceled their participation in the school trip. They won the semifinals at the 60th national table tennis championship as a school team on April 15, the day of departure. The day after the accident, they won the final.

On April 17, 500 students and local residents took part in a candlelight vigil for the victims in the school's sports hall.
