The glass water flea ( Daphnia hyalina ) is a species from the genus Daphnia ( Daphnia ).
The size of the species varies between 1 and 3 millimeters, but is usually 2 millimeters. The head is highest behind the eyes. The dewclaws have a number of very delicate purse. In contrast to Daphnia parvula , the tail spine in Daphnia hyalina is long and thin. Seen from the belly, the head has a vertex keel, which is a distinguishing feature to Daphnia longispina . Strong local variations, which depend on age and season, are typical of this species. The food mainly consists of nanoplankton and , to a lesser extent, bacteria . The glass water flea is often found in Europe in areas that were previously glaciated.
