Darbandichan ( Kurdish دەربەندیخان, Arabic دربندخان) is a small Iraqi town in the Sulaimaniyya Province and is located in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region . The city is the capital of the eponymous district of the province.

The place is located on the Diyala River , which was dammed right next to the place by the Darbandichan Dam, built between 1956 and 1961 . The Darbandichan Reservoir is a popular destination for inland tourism.

During the Kermanshah earthquake in 2017 , the city was the hardest hit place in Iraq. The quake killed 4 people in the city and injured 50 people. Some houses were destroyed and the hospital was badly damaged. The power grid and water pipes were also affected. The dam survived the quake without major damage. However, boulders fell on the overflow channel and cracks appeared in the upper area of the dam. The tunnel that connects the city to the dam has been closed for safety reasons.
