Dario Palermo (born June 14, 1970 in Milan , Italy ) is an Italian composer.

biography

Dario Palermo began his musical studies in classical guitar at the age of nine; this was followed by percussion with Italo Savoia ( Teatro alla Scala in Milan) and shortly afterwards at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano with David Searcy and Jonathan Scully. In his early years as a performer, he played in several ensembles, chamber groups and orchestras under Václav Neumann , Christa Ludwig , Thomas Allen and Claudio Abbado .

During the years at the Civica Scuola di Musica, Dario Palermo studied composition with Massimiliano Carraro, Giorgio Taccani and Giovanni Verrando. Dario Palermo also attended seminars and classes with Pierre Boulez , Franco Donatoni , Emmanuel Nunes , Aldo Clementi and especially with Gérard Grisey .

From 2003 he commuted between France and Great Britain, where he did a PhD in composition and technology at the University of East Anglia under the direction of Simon Waters.

In 2011 he received support from the RPS Drummond Fund for the world premiere of the composition The Difference Engine .

Between 1993 and 1999 he worked at Agon, center for research and production on the use of electronic and computer technologies, with Luca Francesconi as artistic director. In Agon he was involved in the programming and implementation of concerts, installations, musical theater works and festivals.

Dario Palermo has composed works that vary from solo instruments to orchestras, largely involving the use of electroacoustic devices and new technologies. His compositions have been performed all over Europe, America and Asia. He has received commissions from many organizations, festivals, ensembles and chamber groups. His most recent works have premiered at Kings Place, London; Mediarte Festival, Monterrey; Sonority Festival, Belfast; Southbank Center and Southbank Centre's Purcell Room, London; Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City; Gare du Nord, Basel; Visiones Sonoras Festival, Morelia and Biennale di Venezia .

Since 1995 he has been teaching composition, theory and analysis, electroacoustic composition and new technologies.
