The Dark Horse Nebula or Great Dark Horse is a large dark cloud . It is located in the southern constellation Serpent Bearer , near the border with Scorpio and Sagittarius ; Viewed from Earth, it obscures parts of the upper center of the Milky Way . In regions where there is no light pollution , the mist can be seen with the naked eye.
The name of the nebula suggests its resemblance to the silhouette of a horse, which appears dark against the starry background. The Great refers to its large apparent size, it is one of the largest complexes of dark nebulae: The rear part of the nebula (trunk and hind legs) is also called the Pipe Nebula called, in turn, the designations B77 , B78 and B59 in Barnard catalog bear . The Snake Nebula joins the Dark Horse Nebula and extends to the Rho Ophiuchus Nebula .
