Dark Society (Original title: Society ) is a US-produced horror film from 1989 . It was Brian Yuzna's first job as a director.

action

Thanks to his wealthy parents, the young Bill Whitney belongs to the high society of Beverly Hills and is at the height of his young life: He is popular with everyone, is about to be elected school president and has the best friend in town. But gradually he notices that his family and friends are beginning to change. Only he and his best friend Milo seem unaffected.

Bill begins to see strange things and even begins to doubt his sanity. When a strange tape falls into his hands after its owner has been brutally killed, he has the growing suspicion that something sinister is going on around him. He feels confirmed in this when more people die and a little later reappear completely unscathed. Together with his friend Milo, Bill tries to get to the bottom of the matter and fathoms the gruesome truth: As a child, Bill was adopted and raised by his supposed parents, in order to later serve as food for the elite members of a society at a party. In front of Bill's eyes, his schoolmate David, believed to be dead, is gruesomely eaten by members of society. Bill's only chance to survive is a fight against one of the members, in which he wins after a tough fight by "turning his opponent inside out".

Together with Milo and his girlfriend Clarissa, who, as it turns out, is also a member of society, Bill escapes from his parents' house. The company decides to move to Washington.

Others

  • During the film it is not made clear exactly what the members of society are. It is implied that it is a very old race that developed parallel to the human and has steadily increased its population over the years with the aim of becoming the dominant species in the world.
  • In what was then West Germany , the film was released on VHS under the title Dark Society .
  • Although completed in 1989, the film was only released in its country of origin in 1992.

Frames

For a long time in the USA the film was only available in an R-rated version shortened by 4 minutes and 30 seconds, whereas in Germany the film was available uncut from the beginning. Only with the medium of DVD was an uncut version (unrated) released in the USA. The cuts related to both violence and plot scenes.

The film was indexed in Germany in 1990. For a publication as Society the Horror in February 2010, the label CMV Laservision had a legal opinion drawn up, as FSK approvals only apply to a single label and indexed films are not checked by the FSK. In mid-July 2013, the film was removed from the index at the request of the Capelight label and received an FSK approval from 16 .
