Daryl Vaz is a son of Douglas Vaz , who served as Minister of Industry and Commerce from 1980 to 1986 during the government of Prime Minister Edward Seaga . Vaz attended the Mona Preparatory School and from 1974 to 1980 the Campion College, from 1981 to 1983 the Miami Dade Community College in Miami , Florida. From 1983 he worked in the used car import industry, including as managing director of various companies. Vaz is married for a second time and has one child with his second wife. He has five children from his first marriage.

politics

Vaz was a member of the Kingston & St. Andrew Corporation Council from 1986 to 1990, but then retired from active politics in the 1990s. He left the JLP for some time to join Bruce Goldings' National Democratic Movement with his father , before they all returned to the JLP in 2002.

In the general election on September 3, 2007, Vaz was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the JLP for the constituency of Western Portland . After winning this election, the JLP formed the new government and Vaz was appointed Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister by the newly elected Prime Minister Golding . Vaz's election was retrospectively challenged by Abraham Dabdoub, the defeated rival candidate of the People's National Party (PNP), and annulled by a court order because Vaz was also a US citizen at the time of the election . After Vaz lost his US citizenship, a by-election was held in Western Portland on March 23, 2009, in which he was confirmed as a member of the House of Representatives. On April 1, 2009 he was sworn in again as Minister of State.

Shortly thereafter, as part of the cabinet reshuffle of April 6, 2009, Vaz was appointed Minister without Portfolio in the Prime Minister's Office with responsibility for information, telecommunications and special projects. When Andrew Holness succeeded Golding as Prime Minister in October 2011, he took over Vaz in his previous role in his cabinet. Vaz resigned on January 6, 2012 after the JLP lost to the PNP in the December 29, 2011 parliamentary election.
