That fellow in heaven

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The peasant in heaven is a sway ( ATU 802). In the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm from the 3rd edition of 1837 onwards, it is in place 167 (KHM 167) in Alemannic dialect .

content

A poor peasant comes to the gate of heaven at the same time as a rich man. At first Peter only sees the rich, he is received with a lot of music. The peasant asks whether things are partial in heaven. Peter explains that it is so rare for a rich man to go to heaven.

origin

Grimm's comment is: Told in the best way by Friedrich Schmid near Arau . Wilhelm Wackernagel sent it to them together with KHM 165 Der Vogel Greif . The oldest literary precursor is the poem Das Bürle im Himmel. A fairy tale by Daniel Schubart (1774).

It is obviously based on the biblical words It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to come into the kingdom of God ( Mark 10, 25 , Matthew 19, 24 , Luke 18, 25 ) and so there will also be joy in heaven above a sinner who repents before the ninety-nine righteous who are in no need of repentance ( Luke 15: 7 ).
