The pigeon collar is a novel by Ernst W. Heine . The first edition was published in 1994 by Albrecht Knaus Verlag in Munich .

The novel describes the journey of the young Templar Orlando, who is sent to the Middle East after a mysterious assassination attempt. The reason for the trip is the murder of his twin brother Adrian, also a member of the Templar Order , of the Duke of Kelheim . Adrian had been sent to the Assassins on his last mission to the Order and was lost there. His return as an assassin raises many unanswered questions that Orlando is supposed to investigate on his twin brother's journey.

In the further course, Heine describes an excellently researched world of the Templars and Assassins, the rituals and myths in the time of the Crusades. Many historical details are described in novel form and insights into the everyday life of the parties involved are given.

The title of the book, The Dove's Collar or Of Love and Lovers , goes back to a treatise on love written by the Muslim scholar Ibn Hazm in the 11th century in Al Andalus.

Significance in the book market

The novel hit the bestseller lists in 1994 . In issue 37 of Focus it was tenth and in issue 38 it was still at number 14 on the list, which was also held at the end of September 1994.
