The Year of the Werewolf (in the original English language Cycle of the Werewolf ) is a calendar story published in 1984 by the American writer Stephen King . The illustrations are by Bernie Wrightson . The German edition was published in 1985, translated by Harro Christensen. The calendar story has been edited together with Stephen King's script based on it in a volume under the title The Werewolf by Tarker Mills .

The small town of Tarker's Mills is terrified by a terrifying beast. It begins in January when the railroad brakeman Arnie Westrum is attacked and killed by a beast in a signal shed. This beast is a werewolf and its year has begun. Every month when the moon is full, the beast kills animals and people fall victim to it. The police assume a serial killer. The residents of Tarker's Mills are frightened and are trying to protect themselves from the beast. Only young Marty, who is in a wheelchair, knows how to fight a werewolf and survives an encounter unharmed. But who is the werewolf?

Stephen King released the film rights and wrote the script for his calendar story himself. It received the title The Werewolf by Tarker Mills (Silver Bullet) . Based on Stephen King's calendar story and his script, the film The Werewolf was made by Tarker Mills .
