Josef Georg Hörl

Josef Georg Hörl (born August 22, 1722 in Vienna ; † December 9, 1806 there ) was an Austrian lawyer and mayor of Vienna .

On March 9, 1747, he was elected as judge of the town and district court, on May 24, 1760, he was elected magistrate, and on November 20, 1764 he was appointed town and district judge for the first time.

Hörl was Mayor of Vienna from February 16, 1773 to October 30, 1804 and from 1778 also advised Emperor Joseph II on the reorganization of the administration. During Hörl's tenure, the establishment of the General Hospital (1784), the Theater in der Josefstadt (1788) and the Theater an der Wien (1798–1801) fell. In 1784 the abolition of the church yards within Vienna and the ban on all burials in the city and the suburbs were initiated, as well as in 1799 the construction of the water pipeline in the Alservorstadt.

With a term of office of 31 years, 9 months and 14 days, Hörl was the longest serving mayor of Vienna. In 1870, Hörlgasse in Vienna- Alsergrund (9th district) was named after him.
