action

Roland Deschain and his Ka-Tet are still on their way to the Dark Tower when they face a storm in the borderlands. While they stay in the shelter, Roland tells an adventure of his youth about the "Fellmann".

After his mother's death, he and his friend Jamie were sent to Debaria to face the Fellmann, a murderous shapeshifter. In Debaria they find an eyewitness to an attack, a boy who only saw the shapeshifter's feet. While Jamie brings the suspects to confront them, Roland tells the boy a story about another boy, Roland calls this story "the wind through the keyhole".

This "story in history" is about a boy whose father was allegedly killed by a dragon. Fearing that she would lose the house the next time she collected tax, the boy's mother married her late husband's boyfriend, a violent alcoholic. In the course of the story, the boy learns that his mother, who has now been blind, lost her sight after being beaten by her new husband. He befriends a magician who has been transformed into a "Tyger", escapes a severe storm, redeems the magician and receives a healing spell for his mother in return.

The eyewitness recognizes the shapeshifter by a tattoo and a scar, whereupon he turns into a snake and kills two people. Roland shoots the snake with a silver bullet. As the story progresses, he learns news about his mother.

After Roland tells his story to the Ka-Tet, the storm has subsided and they can move on.
