Life and Writing (in the original: On Writing) is a non-fiction book by Stephen King that was published by Scribner in 2000 . In the same year Ullstein Verlag published the German translation by Andrea Fischer .

The book is divided into two halves.

In the first half of the book, King talks about his childhood and his studies, highlighting impressive experiences or events that have shaped him. King writes about the genesis of some of his novels and also goes into his alcohol and drug addiction .

In the second half of the book, King gives instructions and assistance for readers who want to start writing novels themselves. The peculiarities and characteristics of his literary style are explained. Stephen King also examines passages from the works of some well-known authors such as John Steinbeck and George V. Higgins .

After the two halves there is an addendum in which King describes the accident, the victim of which he was in the middle of the process of writing the book and which explains the break between the first and the second half.
