The theater on Effingerstrasse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Theater an der Effingerstrasse (spelling: DAS THEATER an der Effingerstrasse ) is a spoken theater in the Swiss federal city of Bern .

history

The Theater an der Effingerstrasse opened its first season with a stage version of Irmgard Keun's novel Das Kunstseidene Mädchen in 1996, after the Atelier Theater had to close its doors after 45 years of existence in the same year and was continued under a new name by Markus Keller and Ernst Gosteli . The theater does not have a permanent ensemble; nine in-house productions with specially committed actors come on stage each year, as well as guest performances by domestic and foreign groups.

The theater is subsidized by several agencies, including the City of Bern, but is largely financed by its own income. It is located at Effingerstrasse 14, on two floors of a multi-purpose building built in 1951. There is space for around 160 spectators in the theater hall (1st basement). The theater bar is located in the second basement.

In 2015 Ernst Gosteli withdrew from the management of the theater.

At the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Markus Keller will hand over the artistic direction to Alexander Kratzer , who has been staging regularly at the house since 2010.

Productions

The Theater an der Effingerstrasse developed as a premiere stage for adaptations of novels by the writer Lukas Hartmann . Here The Woman in Furs , The Hunter's Daughter , The German in the Village and A Picture of Lydia were premiered.

The theater on Effingerstrasse is connected to Friedrich Dürrenmatt through the history of the house. The great Swiss writer staged his own version of The Visit of the Old Lady on the stage of the theater in 1959 .

Numerous Swiss premieres, including Terror by Ferdinand von Schirach , Bella Figura by Yasmina Reza , Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith .
