Markus Keller (born June 21, 1947 in Bern ) is a Swiss theater director , director and author .

Life

Markus Keller did an apprenticeship as a draftsman, later he trained as a youth and social worker and worked in this profession for a while. In 1976, together with Kurt Frauchinger, he founded the Chindlifrässer room theater in Bern, which existed until 1981 and then, under the name of Theater Chindlifrässer, together with the Bern City Theater, initially staged plays for young people and later also for adults. Among other things, pieces from Keller's own pen were premiered there, such as Bombenschtimmig or Sometimes I Wanna Kill, Sometimes I Wanna Die and youth theater pieces .

Keller also worked for open-air theaters, for which he wrote pieces based on literary models, including demons based on Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose or The Hunchback based on the Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo .

Keller delivered directorial work at the Landestheater Burghofbühne Dinslaken and at the Landesbühne Hannover . He also wrote and produced radio plays and was part of the team of authors for the Swiss television series Motel in the 1980s .

In 1996, together with Ernst Gosteli , Keller founded the Theater an der Effingerstrasse in Bern, which he managed together with Tanja Geier until 2020 and which he also works on as a director.

At the beginning of the 2020/21 season, he will hand over the artistic direction to Alexander Kratzer , who has been staging regularly at the house since 2010.
