Joanna Murray-Smith (born April 17, 1962 in Mount Eliza , Victoria ) is an Australian writer.

The editor's daughter Stephen Murray-Smith attended her hometown school and studied at Melbourne University . She quickly became one of the most important Australian playwrights, who also found international recognition.

Her most successful piece to date is Honor (1995). This adultery drama was read at the New York Stage and Film Festival by Meryl Streep , Sam Waterston, and Kyra Sedgwick ; the 1998 Broadway production received nominations for two Tony Awards . It has been performed in more than 20 states and printed in the United States, Australia, and Japan. Murray-Smith received the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Honor and Rapture , and Bombshells received the London Theatregoers' Choice Award and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award .

Murray-Smith also wrote novels and the libretto for Paul Grabowsky's opera Love in the Age of Therapy (2004) as well as newspaper columns.
