David (Alwa)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David († November 1015 ) was a king of the Nubian- Christian Empire of Alwa , who ruled from 999 to 1015. So far, David is only known from his tombstone, which was built into the floor of a church (building D) in Soba , the capital of Alwa. So far he is the only ruler of this empire that can be dated with certainty.

The tombstone of David is made of marble and is inscribed with twenty lines of a not very good Greek text from a Byzantine prayer for the dead. The text mentions that David reigned 16 years and in the year 732 the martyr died on the second day of the month of Hathor (the month starts on November 10-11) on Thursday. The stele and the text are rather rough. The exact dating has been questioned in research.
