David Cecil, 3rd Earl of Exeter

David Cecil, 3rd Earl of Exeter (* around 1600 , † 1643 ) was an English peer and politician.

Cecil was the son of Sir Richard Cecil , landlord of Wakerley in Northamptonshire , from his marriage to Elizabeth Cope, daughter of Sir Anthony Cope, 1st Baronet. On his father's side he was a grandson of Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter .

He was at Clare College of Cambridge University trained and joined in 1627 the Law Society of Lincoln's Inn in. In 1640 he took part in the Short Parliament as MP for Peterborough .

Since his cousin William Cecil, 16th Baron de Ros had died in 1618, he inherited his nobility titles as Earl of Exeter and Baron Burghley when his uncle William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Exeter died in July 1640 .

Cecil was married to Elizabeth Egerton, daughter of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater . He had three children with her. His daughter, Lady Frances Cecil, married Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury . His older son Thomas Cecil died unmarried and childless in May 1641. His younger son John Cecil inherited his title of nobility in 1643.
