David M. Walba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Mark Walba (born June 29, 1949 in Oakland (California) ) is an American chemist ( organic chemistry , supramolecular chemistry , liquid crystals ).

Walba received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley , in 1971 , and received his PhD in 1975 from Caltech with Robert E. Ireland with a dissertation on the total synthesis of a natural product. As a post-doctoral student he was an NIH Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles with Donald J. Cram until 1977 . He then became an assistant professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and in 1987 professor. He is in both the Chemistry Department and the Chemical and Bioengineering Department and Associate Director of the Soft Materials Research Center.

He is known for the synthesis of molecules in Möbius strip topology. He later worked on the synthesis of liquid crystals and organic photonic materials.

In 1984 he was co-founder and until 1994 Vice President for Research and until 1994 Supervisory Board at Displaytech Inc.

In 1982/83 he was a Sloan Research Fellow and from 1984 to 1986 Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar. In 1999 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
