David Macdonald (organist)

David George Macdonald (born July 9, 1952 in Port Morien , † August 9, 2003 in Halifax (Nova Scotia) ) was a Canadian organist.

Macdonald studied organ with Maitland Farmer and John Grew at Dalhousie University until 1974 . He continued his education at McGill University with Raymond Daveluy (until 1977) and with a grant from the Canada Council with Marie-Claire Alain and Daniel Roth at the Conservatoire de Rueil-Malmaison in Paris.

In 1987 he became music director at the First Baptist Church in Halifax. With the choir of the church, which he developed into the leading vocal ensemble of Nova Scotia, he went on a concert tour through France in 1990. He also taught organ at Dalhousie University and gave organ courses at the Atlantic School of Theology , where he worked as an organist, choir director and teacher of church music history and hymnology.

With the Symphony Nova Scotia he appeared as a guest conductor, organ soloist and continuo player. As a concert organist he performed a. a. in France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the UK. He became famous with the performance of the entire organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach in various churches in Halifax from 1985 to 1987 and again in 1997. For the CBC , he recorded parts of this performance in 1987 on the Beckerath organ of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Montreal. With the recording of David MacDonald Plays the Casavant Organ , Macdonald won the East Coast Music Award in 1999 .
