Raymond Daveluy

Joseph Eugène Raymond-Marie Daveluy (born December 23, 1926 in Victoriaville , † September 1, 2016 in Montreal ) was a Canadian organist , composer and music teacher .

Daveluy had his first music lessons from his father, the organist Lucien Daveluy . He then studied music theory with Gabriel Cusson from 1939 to 1946 and organ with Conrad Letendre in Montreal from 1942 to 1948 . In 1948 he won the Prix ​​d'Europe and continued his training with Hugh Giles in New York.

In Montreal he worked as an organist at the St-Jean-Baptiste Church (1946–51), the Immaculée-Conception Church (until 1954) and the St-Sixte Church (until 1959). From 1957 to 1960 and from 1978 to 1988 he taught at the Montreal Conservatory, of which he was director from 1974 to 1978. Between 1970 and 1974 he directed the Conservatory of Troi Rivière . From 1966 he also gave organ courses at McGill University . His students included Pierre-Yves Asselin , Paul Crawford , Mireille Lagacé , Lucienne L'Heureux-Arel , David Macdonald and Rachel Laurin .

In 1946 Daveluy began his career as a concert organist. He has performed in Canada, the United States and Europe and has also played works by contemporary Canadian composers such as Arthur Letondal , Amédée Tremblay and Conrad Letendre. In 1959 he won an improvisation competition in Haarlem, the Netherlands . He took part in various festivals in Austria, Belgium, England, France and Germany, performed in London's Royal Festival Hall and Notre Dame de Paris , at the meeting of the American Guild of Organists (1977) and the International Congress of Organists in Cambridge (1987) and gave concerts in Tokyo and Seoul.

Daveluy emerged as a composer with an organ concerto, a number of organ sonatas and other works for the instrument, chamber music (including sonata for trumpet and organ) and choral works (including two masses). In 1980 he was honored as a member of the Order of Canada . Daveluy was the brother of the singer Marie Daveluy and married to the pianist Hilda Metcalfe .
