David Novros studied at the University of Southern California in the early 1960s before moving to New York in 1965. After graduating in 1963, Novros traveled nine months through Europe to study works of art history. Novros emphasizes the experience with these works as influential for his own artistic work. David Novros was initially connected to the Park Place Gallery, an artist gallery in Soho, in New York, where he had his first exhibition with Mark di Suvero . In 1966 Novros took part in the influential group exhibition on abstract painting of the 1950s and 1960s Systemic Painting at the Guggenheim Museum . Novros' works in the 1960s consist essentially of multi-part paintings that are shaped like canvases . The installation character and the intention of Novros to conceive his paintings for the specific space in each case allowed him to develop his artistic work towards wall painting, which he carried out as a fresco. The first fresco by David Novros was created for Donald Judd in 1970 in his house on Spring Street.

As an abstract painter in New York, David Novros is sometimes assigned to minimal art . Novros itself has always refused this assignment. The style of painting in his paintings, especially the use of the fresco, set him apart from being too minimal. His paintings are more comparable to those of Brice Marden or Paul Mogensen, with whom Novros is also friends.
Due to David Novro's interest in wall painting, he distanced himself from the art market and rarely exhibits in commercial galleries.
